Carter County · at intersection of Daisy Lane and US-70 in Dickson

Get directions ↗

Joseph A. Callaway gained international recognition as a director, critic, and Shakespearean actor. Rosella Hightower is one of five American Indian prima ballerinas depicted in Mike Larsen’s mural Flight of Spirit, on display in the State Capitol. A world-renowned ballerina of Choctaw descent, Hightower performed with several companies and founded the Center for Classical Dance in Cannes, France.

Although the marker text refers to Rosella Hightower as Chickasaw, available primary and secondary sources suggest that she was of Choctaw descent. Note from the marker program.
