Panhandle Area Natural Gas

The Hugoton-Panhandle gas field, which covers much of the Oklahoma Panhandle, is the largest individual gas reserve in the United States and an important source of helium. Development of the gas reserves was hampered until construction of a high-pressure pipeline from the field to Chicago markets in 1931. Completion of the pipeline ushered in the age of long-distance pipeline transportation of energy and the widespread use of natural gas at points distant from its source.
