In 1903, the town was founded by and named for Deputy US Marshal Paden Tolbert, who served the federal court in the Western District of Arkansas presided over by Judge Isaac C. Parker, the “hanging judge.” After Paden’s death in 1904, his wife Lucy became the town’s postmaster. Paden is the only town in Oklahoma to be named after a deputy US marshal.
