White Oaks grew into a bustling mining town after gold was discovered in 1879. Mines were given colorful names like The Boston Boy, Lady Godiva and Old Abe. It is said that Old Abe produced more than $3,000,000 in gold. The bonanza town boasted four newspapers, two hotels and many saloons. In 1898 the town was bypassed by the railroad, and thereafter was virtually abandoned.

The Historic Preservation Division notes that its marker spreadsheet may be out of date and in places inaccurate, and that it does not know where every marker now stands. These pages carry the spreadsheet’s record; a marker listed here may have moved or may no longer stand. the program’s page ↗
