This paraje, or stopping place, was one of the most important on the entire length of the Camino Real. It provided a final opportunity to water stock down Tonuco Draw to the river, and to prepare their caravans before leaving the Rio Grande Valley and entering the desolate Jornada del Muerto. Travelers on their way to Santa Fe started in the evening and pushed on until they reached the Paraje de Fray Cristόbal 100 miles to the north. People headed south faced a day's journey to Paraje Robledo near the site of Ft. Selden.
