Sandstone Fire

Pine County · U. S. highway 61 · location approximate

Directions to the area ↗

Along with Hinckley and other communities in the western part of Pine County, this town was totally destroyed by the terrible forest fire of September 1, 1894. More than 400 men, women, and children lost their lives in the area swept by the fire.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
