Sandy Lake Post

Aitkin County · Trunk highway 65, Libby · location approximate

Directions to the area ↗

The American Fur Company was established near here about 1830, after an earlier location further south at the Northwest Company's station had been abandoned. William A. Aitkin for many years was a leading trader in this region. Indian missions were also located here from 1832 to 1855.

Verbatim 1940 text, presented as a historical record, not current interpretation. Minnesota now calls the 1862 conflict the U.S.-Dakota War and has since replaced the wording on some of these signs.
