Wallace

In 1884, William R. Wallace built a cabin at a site he called Placer Center. A community grew, took the name Wallace, and became the commercial hub of the nation’s richest silver-mining district. Wallace has retained a large number of historic buildings reflecting its mining past. As engineers designed the Interstate 90 expansion, the original plan took the highway through town, requiring the removal of much of the pristine architecture. The community successfully argued for an alternative. In 1991, Wallace ceremonially retired the last stoplight on the 3,000-mile Interstate 90—as the new freeway bypassed the town.
