In 1871, Frederick Post negotiated with Moses Seltice and other Schitsu’umsh (Coeur d’Alenes) here. Post acquired rights to a nearby waterfall. Despite popular legend, Post and Seltice never signed a treaty here. Some of the markings on nearby Treaty Rock might pre-date 1871; others probably came later to commemorate the negotiations. But undisputed is the enduring legacy of Post and the Seltice family. The waterfall Post acquired powered his sawmill—this region’s first. He also platted this town bearing his name. Numerous place names in Washington, Idaho, and Montana—Seltice or Saltese—bear witness to that family’s significance.
