McCroskey State Park

Virgil McCroskey had patience. A local pharmacist and conservationist, McCroskey often hiked these woods. In the 1930s, he began purchasing property to prevent logging. He stitched together a narrow strip of land and constructed a road he called Skyline Drive, with expansive views of farms and mountains. Twice he offered it to Idaho as a park. The legislature declined. In 1955, the state finally accepted his 4,400-acre donation, provided he maintain it for 15 years. McCroskey did, even purchasing additional park property. He died in 1970 at age 93. Mary Minerva McCroskey State Park honors his mother.
