You are traveling through the traditional homelands of the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho. An ancient and unique culture, the Kootenai speak a language unlike any other in the world and are known for their sturgeon-nose canoes and flat bows made of yew. Despite several attempts at removal, the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho refused to leave their homes near Bonners Ferry and move to a reservation, resulting in years of hardship. In 1974, the population of the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho was 67 people. In desperation, they declared war against the United States and successfully secured a land base and federal recognition.
