Kingsboro & Cataula

Georgia’s first narrow-gauge railroad (North & South RR) ran through Cataula and ended in Kingsboro. Chartered in 1870 with a route from Columbus to Rome, the railroad was reorganized in 1879 and changed its name to the Columbus and Rome Railroad Company in 1882. The name Cataula is from the Creek language. Clowers Methodist Church, organized as “Providence” in 1829, was built of logs by Thomas Clowers and others. The church was later rebuilt in 1834, with James Dorrough, Jr. as pastor. Rehoboth Baptist Church was organized 1 ¼ miles south in 1839. Rev. George Granberry was the first pastor, and his family gave the land for the construction of the church. In 1900, the church moved to Cataula. Harmony Primitive Baptist Church was organized in 1840. Thomas McElroy donated the land in 1841, but it was returned to the McElroy Family in 1953.
