Dr. Lyman Hall

Burke County · At the intersection of GA-56 and River Road in Waynesboro.

Dr. Lyman Hall (1724-1790), minister, doctor, planter, patriot, was a Georgia Signer of the Declaration of Independence and a member of the Continental Congress. A native of Conn., he was a founder of Sunbury, on the Ga. coast, and led in making it a center of the Patriot´s cause. While Governor (1783-1790), he proposed the grant of land that led to establishing the University of Georgia, by the first charted state university, by a fellow Yale graduate Abraham Baldwin. Dr. Hall died and was buried on his plantation at Shell Bluff Landing. Later, his body was reinterred in Augusta. The site of the original grave is marked.
