Cheely-Coleman House

Warren County · On GA 123 at Shoals Rd.

This house was built about 1825 by Thomas Cheely of Brunswick County, Virginia, who, in 1812, bought the Bird property and erected a grist mill at Shoals. It took five years of slave labor to build the house, which is put together with pegs. Cheely's daughter, Louisa, married Henry Coleman of Brunswick County, Virginia, and the house has belonged to the Coleman family since. On a bedroom wall is written: "Mayall the names engraved here, In the Golden Book appear", signed by Major General Judson Kilpatrick, Federal cavalry leader, and members of his staff. He spared the houses in Shoals but ordered the mills burned.
