Old Newnan

Pike County · dedicated 1954 · Located at the intersection of U.S. 19 and Georgia Route 109 in Meansville.

In 1823, the Pike County Justices of the Inferior Court selected the center lot in the county, near here, as the site for the county seat. The legislature chose Samuel Mitchell; William Mitchell; William Myrick, who was also Clerk of the Inferior Court; William Johnson; and Hugh F. Rose as the first commissioners of the town. The land was laid out into town lots and named to honor Major General Daniel Newnan, who served in the War of 1812. A temporary courthouse, a tavern, several stores, and many dwellings were built. The town became a place of considerable trade, with American Indians coming from beyond the Flint River to barter their furs. In 1824, Upson County was created from parts of Pike and Crawford counties. The change in county lines made Newnan too far from the center of the county to continue as the county seat, and Zebulon became the new county seat
