Sherman's Left Wing, Jenkins County

While the 17th Corps (Blair's) of the Right Wing of the Gen. Sherman's army [US] was moving to Millen via this road on Dec. 1-2, 1864, the 20th Corps (William) and the headquarters of the left Wing (Slocum) were moving to Buck Head Church via Birds Ville, 4 miles NE on the Old Louisville Road. The 14th Corps (Davis) was on the Old Millen Road, above Birds Ville, on the extreme left of the army and supporting Kilpatrick's cavalry division. The 14th Corps crossed the Augusta and Savannah RR below Waynesboro and marched via the Old Augusta Road (Ga 24), while the 20th Corps crossed the RR above Millen and marched on the Middle Ground Road via Springfield.
