Houston County

Houston County · dedicated 1954 · At the intersection of Jernigan and Carrol Streets; at the Courthouse in Perry.

This County, created by Acts of the Legislature May 15 & December 24, 1821, is named for John Houston, Governor in 1778 & 1784, who served in the Continental Congress in 1775 & '76. In 1774 he called the first meeting of the Sons of Liberty and served as Chairman. As Governor he invaded East Florida with Maj. Gen. Robert Howe in an unsuccessful attempt to take St. Augustine from The British. Among the first County Officers were: Sheriff Edmund C. Beard, Clerk of Superior Court Alexander McCarty, Clerk of Inferior Court Lawson I. Keener, Coroner Henry Audulph and Surveyor Simon Harrell.
