Battle of Rome Cross Roads

Gordon County · dedicated 1953 · On GA 53 near McDaniel Station Road near Calhoun.

*May 16, 1864. McPherson's two A.C. (15 & 16) [US], moving S. from Lay's Ferry (Oostanaula River), enroute to Kingston, were delayed 24 hrs. by Hardee's A.C. [CS] in an action here. Hardee's objective was to insure safety of his wagon-trains. This accomplished, he retreated S. on the road this side of Oothcaloga Creek toward Adairsville. May 17. The Federal 15th & 16th A.C. resumed march toward Kingston, via the Rome Road to McGuire's, & Adairsville.
