Battle Hill

Fulton County · dedicated 1958 · On the edge of Mozley Park at the intersection of Martin Luther King Dr. SW and Mathewson Place SW in Atlanta.

The name "Battle Hill" is associated with the area because of an engagement fought here on July 28, 1864. This was the 3d attempt of the Confederate forces under General John B. Hood to repel the 3 armies, commanded by General Sherman, endeavoring to capture Atlanta. The same Federal forces that fought East of the city July 22, had been shifted to the West to cut the 2 remaining railroads which entered the city from the southwest. Hood attacked with S.D. Lee's and A.P. Stewart's corps; their repeated assaults struck the Federal 15th A.C. but failed to dislodge it. Siege operations persisted until August 25.
