Hardee's Night March

Fulton County · dedicated 1956 · On McDonough Road near Henry Thomas Dr. SE in Atlanta.

Failing to dislodge Federal forces North of Atlanta at Peachtree Creek, July 20, Gen. Hood sent Hardee's A.C. on a 15 mile night march S.E. to the rear of Federal troops in East Atlanta. Hardee began the march after dark, July 21, via Capitol Ave. and McDonough Road. At this point the road turned toward the South River; there was no Moreland Ave (County Line Rd.) at that time. Riding with Hardee's A.C. was Wheeler's Cav., enroute to Decatur to seize the Federal wagon trains parked near the public square. This strategic move in Hood's defense of the city resulted in the major conflict of the Atlanta Campaign - the battle of July 22, 1864.
