Brown's & Clayton's Divisions

Fulton County · dedicated 1956 · At the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and Delta Place in Atlanta.

On the afternoon of July 22, 1864, General Hood of the Confederate Army launched an attack from the east line of the city fortifications against the 15th Army Corps of the United States Army, situated along the Georgia Railroad at DeGress Avenue. The mass assault was carried out by Brown's and Clayton's divisions of Cheatham's Army Corps of the Confederate Army. Brown's brigades included: Manigault's, Sharp's, Coltart's, and Benton's. Clayton's brigades were Stovall's, Baker's, Gibson's, and Holtclaw's. The brigades dislodged four US Army brigades from their entrenched lines on each side of the railroad. This critical moment of battle is depicted by the Cyclorama at the Atlanta History Center.
