Martha Berry, founder of the Berry Schools, was born in Alabama in 1865 and moved to Georgia as an infant. Her father, Capt. Tom Berry, a wealthy banker, moved the family to "Oak Hill" in 1871. From Oak Hill, Martha Berry devoted her life to providing educational opportunities for the children of her less-fortunate neighbors in the mountains. The Berry Schools grew under her direction from a small log cabin on the property in the early 20th century to a campus with nearly 30,000 acres. Since 1928, more than 19,000 students have graduated from Berry College. Martha Berry lived on this property until her death in 1942, leaving an enduring educational legacy.
