On July 22, 1864, General William B. Bate's division of Hardee's Corps (CS) fought in the Battle of Atlanta. Bate’s command included troops from Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Kentucky’s “Orphan Brigade.” Bate’s division stayed at the right of Walker’s division (CS) as they traveled up from Terry's Mill Pond. Bate's troops moved along Sugar Creek Valley and faced Rice’s brigade (US) at today’s intersection of Clay Street and Memorial Boulevard. After Bate’s troops failed to dislodge Rice’s brigade, they went north via Clay Road (now Clay Street SE).

What that marker records spans 1777 to 1789, overlapping William Gabby's years there.
