Gresham's Division

Gresham's Division is a Georgia historical marker in DeKalb County, dedicated 1956.

On Memorial Drive, east of Whiteford Avenue in Atlanta.

July 20, 1864. Brig. Gen. Walter Q. Gresham's 4th div., leading the advance of the 17th A. C. [US] against Wheeler's Cav. [CS] & forcing it W. to Leggett's Hill, halted here at sundown. Leggett's 3d div. was brought forward & would have moved against Wheeler's position one-half mile W. but for failure to get orders. While making a personal reconnaissance of Wheeler's position in his front, Gresham received a wound that ended his military service. In 1893-1895 he was Secretary of State in President Grover Cleveland's Cabinet.
