Garrard & Lightburn to Stone Mountain

DeKalb County · dedicated 1984 · On Fellowship Road, south of Lawrenceville Highway in Tucker.

The principal objective of the wide swing of the United States Army southeast from Roswell, where it crossed the Chattahoochee, was to disable the Georgia railroad at and near Stone Mountain, thereby isolating Atlanta from the east. Pursuant to plan, Logan's 15th Army Corps (US) was posted at Browning's Courthouse in Tucker to support Garrard's Cavalry (US) in the effort to disable the rail line between Stone Mountain and Decatur. On July 18, 1864, Lightburn's brigade of Logan's Corps (US) and Garrard's Cavalry (US) moved on this road to Stone Mountain. All along the way, their progress was resisted and impeded by Wheeler's Cavalry of the Confederate Army.
