The March to Jonesboro

Clayton County · dedicated 1956 · On Old Dixie Road, south of I-285 in Forest Park in Atlanta.

Aug. 30, 1864. Hardee's extended line [CSA] below East Point to Rough & Ready was abandoned at night when he was ordered to take his own & S. D. Lee's corps to Jonesboro where Federal forces were threatening Atlanta's remaining R. R. Hardee's 3 divs.: Brown's, Cleburne's & Maney's (in that sequence) began the march on the main rd. at 10 P. M., followed by Anderson's (of Lee's A. C.) which joined them at East Point. The other two divs. of Lee's A. C.-- Stevenson's & Clayton's -- leaving from Campbellton Rd. via Mt. Zion Ch. & Rough & Ready, passed this point at daylight the 31st, & via the R. R. & Morrow's Station reached their objective.
