Camp Pinckney

Charlton County · On Ga 40 about 2 miles east of Folkston.

Camp Pinckney, a short distance southwest of here, was for many years an important boat landing on the St. Marys River. A ferry operated at that point, and passengers and mail traveling the King's Road north from St. Augustine crossed the river here. It was also an important landing for transferring freight being shipped by boat. Camp Pinckney is said to have been named for Captain Thomas Pinckney, of South Carolina, who encamped here with his troops on an expedition against the Lower Creeks. One of the first turpentine camps in this section was located at Camp Pinckney.
