Built 1842 by John M. Clayton, He was born 1796 at Dagsboro. Secretary of State and Chief Justice of Delaware United States Senator three times, Secretary of State of United States under two Presidents. Negotiated Clayton-Bulwer Treaty with Great Britain. Died 1856. Buried in Old Presbyterian Churchyard, Dover.
