From 1853 until 1870 Keysville was a center of both placer and quartz gold mining. On the knoll just below the townsite may still be seen the outlines of an earthwork fort, built to meet a possible Indian attack in 1863. The original Keys mine is still active.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
