Fort Gunnybags

This is the site of the headquarters of the Vigilance Committee of 1856. On June 21, 1856, Judge David S. Terry was arrested and confined in a cell. During Terry's confinement, the committee, fearing that his friends might attempt to rescue him, decided to fortify their building. Their fortification consisted of gunnysacks filled with sand.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
