Camp Salvation
Here on September 23, 1849, Lieutenant Cave J. Couts, escort commander, International Boundary Commission, established Camp Salvation. From September till the 1st of December 1849, it served as a refugee center for distressed emigrants attempting to reach the gold fields over the southern Emigrant Trail.
1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
