The town of Calico was a result of the silver discovery in 1870 by Lafayette Mecham. Named for the varicolored mountains at its back, Calico once numbered between 3,000 and 4,000 people. In 1882 borax was discovered in the mountains nearby and the town of Borate grew up just over the hill from Calico. As a result Calico survived until 1905.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
