Frank A. Miller (1857-1935) made adobe bricks for a small 12-room guesthouse which he opened in 1876. Over the years by successive building additions he fulfilled his dream by re-creating this early California mission style setting of a hotel.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
