Roop's Fort

Lassen County · Weatherlow Street, Susanville · location approximate

Built in July 1854 by Issac N. Roop. It was first called Roop House and used as a stopping place for emigrant trains. It was the locale of the "sage brush war" fought in 1863 between the citizens of Plumas County and Lassen County.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
