Home established here in 1855 by Edward Fitzgerald Beale on Rancho la Libre. Serving under Commodore Stockton in 1846, he later engaged in mining and became Superintendent of Indian Affairs for California and Nevada and Minister to Vienna.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
