Willard, a native of New Hampshire, died March 6, 1865, was perhaps the last survivor of the exploring party sent out by President Jefferson, under Captain Meriwether Lewis, for the purpose of discovering the course and sources of the Missouri River.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
