This route was used by Luiseño and Gabrielño Indians, whose villages were nearby. Leandro Serrano established here the first home of a white settler in Riverside County in 1820. Over it traveled Jackson and Warner in 1831 and Frémont in 1849. It was the southern emigrant road for gold seekers, 1849-1851; the Overland Mail route, 1858-1861; and a military road between Los Angeles and San Diego, 1861-1865.
