Burial site of sailors and marines in 1872 when San Diego Bay was surveyed and charted by Don Juan Pantoja y Arriaga, pilot, and Don José Tovar, mate, of the royal frigates La Princesa and La Favorita under command of Don Augustin de Echeverria.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
