Posey Station of Butterfield Overland Mail Lines

Two and one-half miles east of this point stood the Butterfield Overland Stage site called Posey Station. Operating through present Kern County during 1858-61 this famous line ran from St. Louis Missouri, to San Francisco until the outbreak of the Civil War.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
