Fort Ross

Founded in 1812 by Russians from Alaska. When Russians withdrew to Alaska in 1841, Captain Sutter bought the improvements and supplies. Acquired by the state in 1906 and the remaining buildings restored—Greek Orthodox Chapel, Commandant's Quarters and Stockade. Chapel destroyed by fire in 1970.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
