S.S. Emidio

Beneath this marker are portions of the hull of the 10,745-ton General Petroleum Corporation tanker, S.S. Emidio, first ship torpedoed and shelled by a Japanese submarine off the Pacific Coast. On December 20, 1941, the Emidio was attacked and disabled with the loss of five lives some 200 miles north of San Francisco. Abandoned, the helpless vessel drifted north and foundered on the rocks off Crescent City. Breaking in two, the bow drifted into the harbor, where it lay southeast of this marker until salvaged in 1950 and 1951.
