This tablet marks the site of the Exchange Hotel. Here June 29, 1851, Masons met for the first time in San Diego, and organized the lodge which became San Diego Lodge No. 35, F. & A.M., the oldest lodge of Masons in southern California.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
