Booming town of Michigan Bar, located one mile to north, once contained 1,500 population, but now practically obliterated by later hydraulic and dredging operations. Gold discovered 1849 by citizens of Michigan after whom settlement named. Pottery works, once largest in the state, located here, and town contained post office and Wells Fargo agency.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
