Site of Brick Building of the Firm of Mellus and Howard

In a building which stood on this site, known as the Mellus and Howard Warehouse, erected in 1848, the Society of California Pioneers was organized August 31, 1850. Its object to collect and preserve the history of California. W. D. M. Howard was its first president. Oldest historical society in state.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
