On November 9, 1849, a charter was granted by the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia for the organization of California Lodge No. 13, Free and Accepted Masons, now California Lodge No. 1. On November 23, 1848, Levi Stowell was appointed master of the new lodge. On November 15, 1849, the lodge was formally organized under the charter.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
