Champagne Cellars of Colonel Agoston Haraszthy and the Buena Vista Vinicultural Society

In 1857 Colonel Haraszthy, father of the modern California wine-growing industry, dug a tunnel into a hillside with Chinese labor on his Buena Vista Vineyards and stored 5,000 gallons of wine as an initial vintage. In 1858 a second tunnel was built and in 1862 a third. In 1861 Colonel Haraszthy was appointed as a commissioner of the state to tour Europe and report on the latest grape and wine practices abroad.
