In 1863 Colonel Baker came to this location. A friend to all travelers. His settlement became known as "Bakers Field." This civic center is his dream come true. His motto—"Time will justify a man who means to do right."

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
