Old Salt Lake

The Indians of this area obtained salt from this lake. Sometime in the 1850's Johnson and Allanson erected the necessary works for the manufacture of salt by artifical as well as solar evaporation. The yield of salt for the year 1879 was 450 tons.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
