Mission San Miguel Arcángel

This site was selected because of the great number of Salinan Indians living hereabout. Fray Fermín Francisco de Lasuén, O.F.M., second president of the California missions, founded San Miguel Arcángel on July 25, 1797. The 16th in a chain of 21 Franciscan missions, its influence has played not only upon the native population, but upon the history of California as a whole.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
