Height of tree 96 feet. Circumference of tree eight feet from ground, 29 feet. Spread of north and south branches 153 feet. Circumference of outside branches 481 feet. Lineal measurement—largest south branch 111 feet. Diameter of trunk eight feet from ground, nine feet. Estimated age of tree 1,000 years (1953). Allowing two feet per person, 8,000 people can stand under this tree. Hooker Oak named in 1887 by Annie E. K. Bidwell in honor of Sir Joseph Hooker, English botantist.

1971 register text, presented as a historical document. It uses the period's terms for Native people; the state's landmark listings still carry most of this wording, and the California Office of Historic Preservation maintains the program's current texts.
